Pitch what only your app does, then add why the founders built it

Former editor says it separates the dozen relevant pitches a day

What they did

Treat solid design, accessibility and polished basics as 'zero' (table stakes). Lead with what is above zero: a cleverly designed feature, use of a newly launched platform sensor or API (Apple, Google, a new OpenAI model), or a fit with current conditions (post-zero-interest rates, COVID), tied to threads the writer already covers. Only then add the personal founder story (e.g. siblings who built an elder-care messaging app when their mother was in hospice). Avoid news hooks on disasters or someone saying something dumb online.

What happened

Guest says differentiation is what makes a writer pick one of the dozen legitimate pitches in their space; no numbers.

“I think it's really important for you to tell stories that they're going to focus on differentiation factors almost exclusively.”

“You have to have a thing that exists that's really well built, that seems clever, that seems like it's tackling an interesting problem, and then you can start telling personal stories.”
