How to Build More Successful Paywalls — Sylvain Gauchet

Short episode for RevenueCat's State of Subscription Apps report. Sylvain Gauchet (Babbel, Growth Gems newsletter) walks through the top paywall 'gems' he curated in 2024: tell a story through onboarding before the paywall, use loss aversion by having users set up premium features first, test multi-screen paywalls (Mimo saw +60% trial opt-in), analyze onboarding and later paywalls separately, layer feature paywall -> benefits pop-up -> single IAP, and don't stack so many aggressive tricks that the app feels scammy.

Trial opt-in rate up 60% (relayed secondhand)

Instead of one long paywall, spread the selling points over multiple screens: list of features, an explanation of how the free trial works (e.g. what happens in 2 days, in 5 days, instead of a single Blinkist-style timeline), social proof, and a basic vs pro comparison, ending with a last-minute pitch/recap. Tested against a long/single paywall. Host suggests taking an existing long paywall and splitting it into 3-4 pages as an easy test; guest notes long paywalls often push plans below the fold and only 'explorers' scroll.

No numbers; relayed as a pattern to catch more of the demand curve

When a user taps a locked feature, quiz or report, show a paywall specific to what triggered it ('Unlock it with premium'). If they close it, show a pop-up listing everything else premium includes. If they decline again, offer an in-app purchase for just that one feature or piece of content. Tip relayed from Jakub Remiar on the 2.5 Gamers show; host adds that Google reports apps using hybrid (subscription + IAP) monetization are succeeding. Both say it is for later-stage apps, not early ones.

Practitioner pattern · Sylvain Gauchet

No numbers; relayed as a loss-aversion pattern

Sequence: onboarding questions -> generic paywall -> more questions tied to specific premium features (or have users set those features up) -> a feature paywall saying 'these are part of the premium plan'. If they reject, explain everything they will lose, i.e. everything they just set up, using sunk cost and loss aversion.
