I Built a $100K/Month Android App

Steve Hoyek co-founded Journable, a simple AI calorie counter. Bootstrapped, it grew from under $1K to ~$100K/month in a year, with ~80% of users and revenue on Android. After a Product Hunt launch, iOS ad costs (~4x Android CPMs) pushed them to Android-only Meta ads, which converted as well as iOS. Growth now runs on Google App campaigns (Play Store ads perform best) at about break-even on ~$500K spend. His playbook: event tracking, install campaigns, bold asset tests, tCPA at 10x target CPA daily budget, then scaling with conversion gains.

Front page; a couple hundred installs and 2 subscribers, enough to validate

Day-zero distribution was a Product Hunt launch. It was featured on the front page. Two paying subscribers from the launch were taken as proof people would pay, after which they started paid ads.

Android converted as well as iOS and was far cheaper; now ~80% of revenue

Bootstrapped and short on cash, they couldn't afford iOS campaigns, so they ran Meta ads to Android users in the US only. Decision was backed by the RevenueCat State of Subscription Apps 2025 report: iOS users cost ~4x more to advertise to but convert only ~20% better. Later tested iOS campaigns too; Android stayed far more cost-effective, and Android ads spilled over into some iOS installs. Then doubled down and raised Android spend.

Lets Google optimize delivery on real purchases; no separate numbers

Step 1 of the playbook: set up measurement so Google Ads receives app events: install, paywall reached, free trial started, purchase, and the purchase value. Google then optimizes campaign delivery on that data. Their stack is Firebase and GA4.

Gives Google baseline install costs to build on; no numbers given

Step 2: launch app install campaigns first to 'feed the algorithm' and get baseline CPI and CPM for the market. Fill every asset slot: 5 headlines, 5 descriptions, up to 20 images and 20 videos; stock images and videos are fine for a proof of concept. Start at about $10-15/day and ramp up. Ads run across Google's network (Play Store, Search, YouTube, Display, Discover); Play Store ads on searches like 'calorie counter' are the top performer.

Step 3, while install campaigns learn: replace stock assets with custom ones (e.g. big text with winning copy). Take big swings with very different images and videos instead of tweaking colors or fonts, and watch for patterns. Most importantly, improve the Play Store screenshots, title, subtitle and description, since Google App campaigns pull from them.

Rule of thumb: Google needs 10 target events a day to optimize

Step 4: once assets are strong, launch a tCPA (target cost per acquisition) campaign. Set the daily budget to 10x the target cost, e.g. a $15 free trial needs $150/day, because Google needs about 10 target events per day to optimize. After a month or two of purchases, you know your CAC and can start scaling.

~$500K spent on Google ads for about the same attributed revenue

Step 5-6: scale budgets over time following Google's best practices, and keep improving the subscription conversion rate (paywall, business model, price tests). As conversion rises, raise budgets. Bootstrapped, they need campaigns to be profitable, so they run near break-even on attributed revenue rather than buying more volume at a lower return.

Founder says simplicity is what makes the app valuable; no numbers

The founders used many calorie counters during their own weight loss and found them complex (searching multiple food databases). Journable lets users type a meal or upload a photo and get calories and macros per ingredient in seconds. Simplicity is the core focus of both the product and the marketing content.
