We built a $30K/month app from 1 piece of content

Alejandro (ex-Lyft engineer) and Mario (met on YC Co-Founder Match) built Pushscroll, an app that makes you do push-ups before you can open social media. Mario validated the idea with a fake TikTok product demo (AI push-up detection clip from YouTube) that got 80K views and 500 comments asking for the app. They shipped a 3-screen MVP in ~2 weeks, launched with a video promising it free for first-week downloaders (20-30K downloads), then put everyone else behind a ~$30/year hard paywall. Organic formats scaled it to $30K/month in 4 months (one 6M-view video = ~10K MRR); they now scale with ads.

80K views and 500 comments begging for the app; became a $30K/month app

Hook: 'What if you could stop your doomscrolling addiction by doing 20 push-ups?' Make it clear enough for a 5-year-old, with a curiosity gap (what do push-ups have to do with doomscrolling?) and novelty. Show the value, not the build: used an AI push-up detection clip found on YouTube, a shot of placing the phone against the wall, then the scrolling part. End with a strong call to action asking whether they should build it. Make the video good, or you can't tell if the idea or the video failed. Pick ideas with one strongly visual element, explainable in three words, solving a fundamental human desire.

One blew up within about a week and became Pushscroll

Mario set out to master virality before building: uploaded daily videos testing app ideas. A viral video is also a signal the idea can go viral again later with UGC or influencer collabs.

Founders say it avoids shadow bans and shows why videos go viral; no numbers

Create a new TikTok account; watch all the videos in your niche (for them, self-improvement), interact by commenting, saving, sharing and reposting, and follow as many creators as you can. Study why the videos go viral; you may find apps worth copying and improving. This signals to TikTok you're not a bot and prevents shadow bans later.

20-30K downloads from the launch video

Built an embarrassingly simple MVP in ~2 weeks: three screens (a half-broken push-up detector, a screen to choose apps to block, a screen blocking those apps until you exercise); all later rewritten. Launched with another TikTok saying the app is free for everyone who downloads in the first week; after that, everyone hit a hard paywall. Their playbook also suggests a waitlist or Discord community between the viral video and launch to keep people updated.

~4,000 paying customers from ~300K downloads

Apart from first-week launch users who got it free, every user sees a hard paywall at around $30/year. They treat people paying as the ultimate validation. Paywalls shown and tested with Superwall.

One 6M-view video brought ~$10K MRR; organic alone reached $30K/month

After launch, post organic content yourself and try different formats every day until one goes viral repeatedly, then rinse and repeat it until it stops working. Keep doing it yourself until ~$5-10K MRR so you know which videos sell before working with influencers or UGC. Then scale with UGC, influencers or paid ads while fixing broken steps in the funnel from view to payment.
