How Cal AI Scaled Influencer Marketing Without Killing Views

Short App Masters clip with Jake Castillo, co-founder of Cal AI. He explains why brands lose money forcing influencers into infomercial-style videos, how Cal AI let creators keep their usual formats with light guidelines (timing, caption tag), how testing moved the app's appearance as early as possible without hurting views (20-30 seconds for Cal AI, 60 seconds for a friend's app), how influencer deals differ from UGC accounts, and the team's high risk tolerance.

Creators called it their easiest brand deal; views stay predictable

Don't force formats or rules on influencers: keep them making the content they always make (e.g. 'what I eat in a day') and slide the app into it. Only give general guidelines: show the app in a certain way, have it come in within a set number of seconds, and include a tag in the caption; otherwise full creative control. Because the video matches the creator's usual content, you can estimate their average views per video with confidence and price the deal (CPM) on that. The failure mode: pricing on a creator's ~1M usual views, then forcing an infomercial-style 'let me tell you about Cal AI' video that gets ~50K views and puts the brand thousands of dollars in the red.

Sweet spot was 20-30 seconds in; earlier hurt views

Started with the app integration required at a later second mark so the video wouldn't feel like an ad and would go more viral. Then tested bringing it in earlier and earlier across influencer videos until finding the earliest point that didn't hurt views: 20-30 seconds in for Cal AI. Earlier integration helps conversions, later helps views; the right timestamp is unique to each app and must be tested, not copied.

60 seconds in was the sweet spot; Cal AI's timing would cut views

A friend's app found its integration sweet spot at the 60-second mark in influencer videos. Using Cal AI's 20-30 second timing would have cost it the views it needs to be profitable.
