App Growth Secrets for 2026 “They” Don’t Want You to Know

Solo App Masters livestream. Steve P. Young pushes distribution first: one premium feature in a keyword niche, ASO, Apple Ads on search results only, and Lifetime Free promos without review asks, then triggered offers over calendar ones (Headway, Prequel, Routinery). Cases: a client's kids app named after two ~30-popularity keywords hit #1 at launch and now makes $10K+/month; his Paraphrase AI makes ~$3K/month organically after Facebook ads failed; a review-timing change lifted ratings 4.5 to 4.7. Ends with listener app audits.

An app for kids · B2C · App Masters client

#1 at launch, $1,600 in 22 days; now $10K+/month

A client (new parent) wanted to build a kids app with a name the host doubted anyone searched. ASO research found a couple of keywords with search popularity around 30. App Masters owned a bought app ranking #1 for two keywords of similar score that brought ~100 downloads/day, proving that score level delivers. They named the client's app after the two new keywords instead of the original name, launched with no trial, then kept improving rankings across many more keywords in the niche.

Paraphrase AI · B2C · AI paraphrasing app

About $3K/month, almost all organic

Distribution first: found the keywords before deciding what to build, then built Paraphrase AI, a niche ChatGPT-wrapper that only rewrites your text in a chosen style (funny, professional) instead of general text generation. One premium feature, niche positioning; also a web version at paraphraseai.net.

Paraphrase AI · B2C · AI paraphrasing app

Pretty good numbers, host says; none shared

Ran localization tests for Paraphrase AI in the Philippines, including adjusting pricing because purchasing power is lower there. Advises starting with a few languages rather than all 35.

Paraphrase AI · B2C · AI paraphrasing app

After reaching ~$2-3K MRR organically in the US and failing with Facebook, the next move is scaling Apple Ads in other localizations, starting with Germany, aiming for another $1-2K from a new market.

Users were starting trials but few paid. Switched the promoted plan from yearly with a 7-day trial to weekly with a 3-day trial, with the yearly plan offered without a trial.

An app at scale · B2C · App Masters client

Average rating 4.5 to 4.7, and more ratings per month

For a client that already had scale, changed when the app asks for a review (late October/November), moving to a triggered moment. Exact trigger withheld (shared in the App Founders community).

Highest-ROI platform across App Masters' partners, host says

Set up a basic Apple Ads campaign: all you need is keywords (broad match is fine), no creative needed. Use only the search results placement; skip every other placement. Adjust cost-per-tap until you hit your target cost per acquisition. Recommended as the low-budget starting channel alongside ASO; Facebook gets too expensive.

App Masters · B2B · app marketing agency

Some apps got 100K downloads; 10K+ signals a winner

Run a Lifetime Free offer (via deal sites like AppAdvice / Indie App Santa) to get initial downloads, traction and feedback. Read the result as a demand test: under ~10K downloads the market may not want it, above 10K you have a winner, 100K is a really big winner. Host has run these since 2013. Do not ask for reviews during the promo.

Worked from 2023, now triggers removed ratings and account suspensions

Starting in 2023, added a review request to Lifetime Free promos. Apple now sees a spike in $0 in-app purchases, reviews and downloads together and flags it. Asking for reviews in onboarding is still fine (Cal AI does it), just not during a Lifetime Free offer.

Listener Tomer redesigned the onboarding and paywall of his flashcard app (seen in the audit: animations, a 'your plan is ready' screen and an aspirational goal date, one-week plan) while downloads stayed the same (~10-20/day).

On the paywall CTA use 'Continue' on iOS (with 'No payment now' underneath) and 'Start Free Trial' on Android. Applies to every CTA on a three-screen paywall. Put the trial info elsewhere and use the headline for the benefit instead.

Pretty good success across App Masters apps; watch annual trial-to-paid

Keep the trial only on the annual plan; remove it from monthly so committed users move to annual. Then monitor trial-to-paid on the annual plan.

Headway · B2C · book summary app

The $29.99 triggered offer is the second-best-selling purchase

When a free user selects a paid book they get the paywall; closing it shows 'Wait, here's a special deal for you' at 70% off. The $29.99 offer only appears in that locked-book flow. Host checked App Store in-app purchase rankings (sorted by quantity) to see it sells second-most after the $89.99 plan. Headway's Yeva told the host the flow 'does great'.

Doing well, host says; no-trial also works for other devs

No free trial anywhere. Two credit plans; credits translated into outputs ('240 credits per day' = up to ~2,000 videos yearly) rather than raw credits. Prices shown per day (as low as $0.13/day), plus a further discount when you slide. Host says per-day framing works better on web.

Life Reset customizes the menu shown when you long-press the app icon: 'We love you. Leave a five-star rating. Deleting it, you want to come back? Do your task'. Host suggests loss framing (you'll lose your flashcards) works because people hate losing things.
