Don't translate your apps yourself; leave it as upside for the buyer

Buyers usually translate first; founder says it makes the app easier to sell

Workedexit-malocalization

What they did

He never localizes his apps into other languages himself. When selling, he frames the app as 'this content already works and we haven't tried X, Y, Z', giving the buyer clear levers; buyers typically localize first, since everyone competes for the US while other markets are large.

What happened

Guest says buyers' first move is normally localization; framed untried levers help sell.

HostIs that a strategy that you've done with your other apps? Like you find that ad format or an organic format, and you like have it in other languages?

17:47

LottsWell, normally whenever I get a buyer, that's the first thing they do. Just because like everyone's competing for the US market, uh but there's also like so many other markets that are super big. It depends on the niche itself.

17:57

HostUS, Philippines, Canada, yeah, interesting. Cuz I feel like most app founders, if you're based in the US or you know that the US is a good market, you just start there, but you don't really think about, okay, you could expand to other markets. Just from like all the people that you talk to, like I'm sure you get a lot of frequently asked questions of people who are just starting out. They're they they see the opportunity of building consumer apps …

21:50

HostThe other thing is it has to be a good app. You know, like the there needs to be a reason for the buyer to to want to acquire the app, to see some growth potential.

21:58

LottsAnd yeah, you got to give them like reasons to purchase, right? And it's the reason that I never do internationalization of my apps in terms of the different languages myself. If I go to you, I'm like, "Oh yeah, cool, buy Toxic Traits. Um we've tried everything, and it just didn't work." But if you frame it as, "Okay, we've got this content, this thing is already working. We haven't even tried this, this, this, and this," so to you, you're thinking, "Oh, actually, yeah, this could like some key things that can kind of pull on to kind of grow this super quick."

22:23

HostThat makes sense. That's just how it works with like private equity and acquisitions. Like each type of operator specializes in a different stage of the business. So for you, it's like you specialize in the 0 to 1, getting it to 100k ARR, and people who are good at the internationalization and other 1 to 10 kind of growth stage, they will highly value that. So if you don't have a whole year's worth of ARR, does that decrease the multiple?
