Post shock-value TikToks across 10-12 accounts to get people arguing in comments

Early comments were angry, then turned to 'I needed this'; main driver of growth

Workedorganic-short-videougc-creators

What they did

Worked with an agency running 10-12 TikTok accounts, testing different hooks. Optimized for comments and engagement ('comment farming'). Chose a shock-factor angle that felt like the opposite of religion itself; early comments were 'why would you do this?' before shifting to 'I really needed this app'. Made 20-30 videos on the winning angle. Pick the one emotion you want viewers to feel after each video.

What happened

Guest says it worked really well and TikTok was the main driver of the first revenue; one video on the angle far outperformed the rest.

HostThat's awesome. Can you tell the story of how you grew it?

LottsYeah, yeah, yeah. So we had like I think 10 or 12 TikTok accounts. So we had an agency that actually helped us with that and with scaling that. And then we wanted to find different types of content that worked well. Different hooks specifically. And what we found, or what I found in generally with like UGC is that you want people to be commenting a lot um and engaging a lot. So we kind of did a lot of comment farming. And then we found that, "Oh, what's like the opposite of religion itself and what would kind of like the shock factor?" And we were like, "Oh actually, yeah. We'll probably give that shock kind of like shock factor itself." And you know, when we first kind of posting that type of content, we found that all commenting like, "Oh, why would you do this? Blah, blah, blah." But after a while, people were like, "Oh yeah, I really needed this app," and ended up working out really well for us.

HostI feel like finding viral formats like this is it takes a lot of tries for most people. How did you like find this? Cuz this is a perfect intersection of it actually shows the demo of the app, and then it's also kind of a controversial like viral hook.

3:43

LottsYeah, yeah, for sure. I think something that helped, I'd say is two things. I think what you need to do is find that one emotion specifically that you want people to feel after that content, and that one thing it is. And then number two, I actually am a very big fan of what make your splash page. The splash page is when you open the app first, that kind of like first animation you see. So for us it was a Praycreen kind of like halo thing coming up. Making that really nice, and then using that for the content. Because that helps kind of like brand things, and then you don't actually have to go through the onboarding process within the TikTok itself. It's kind of like, okay, you show it for like half a second or a second, and then the next time you show the phone, you just show like a screen that's like the one that's shareable essentially.

HostI feel like this is a really good app idea. Did you actually think about Opal? Cuz I know Opal makes like 5 million ARR. Did you specifically think like, "How do we get some of this market?"
