What they did
Testing a one-time in-app purchase priced under $5 as a tripwire alongside the subscription paywall, on the idea (borrowed from Hily) that people who pay a little are more likely to pay more later. Suggested ladder given to an audited app: if the user dismisses the subscription paywall, offer a small bundle (e.g. 5 items for $5, a dollar each); if they decline that, offer free credits for watching an ad.
What happened
Brings in one or two one-time purchases every day; effect on subscription conversion not reported.

“the one thing that I've been testing, too, Summer, is just like a one-time in-app purchase”
“So some like low-price offer, I would say under $5, that can get people to convert, cuz if you can get them to convert, they're likely to convert into a hopefully a subscription.”
“we have tried this with another app, and we we get like one or two sales every day”
