Savvy Navvy · navigation app for boats
Walk the docks with a clipboard and ask every boater what bugs them
Showed the problem went far beyond ocean racers; founder says it convinced him
Workedvalidationin-person
What they did
Before building, went to the UK south coast with a clipboard (people answer questions from someone with a clipboard) and spent hours walking every pontoon, interviewing sailors, motorboaters, kayakers and paddleboarders about how they go boating and what stops them going out more. Keeps talking to customers per region for new features (e.g. Italy has no tides).
What happened
Found that qualified boaters avoided going out for fear of getting tidal calculations wrong, so the market was far bigger than ocean racers.

In their words
Sub Club by RevenueCat · Why He Crowdfunded Millions Instead of Raising VC — Jelte Liebrand, Savvy Navvy“I even bought a clipboard because... Not that I needed a clipboard, but anybody with a clipboard is taken seriously, right?”
“And so, I spend hours, literally hours, walking up and down every pontoon I could find to talk to any boater I could find to just understand how they go boating”
