How Savvy Navvy grows

10 tactics and 13 figures from 1 interview.

Savvy Navvy is a boating navigation app whose founder started by interviewing boaters on the docks and found many stayed ashore for fear of getting tide calculations wrong. It raised money from its own users through crowdfunding instead of VC, and grew through boating instructors and boat makers, which turned into a B2B business alongside about $3.5M in consumer ARR.

Savvy Navvy's 10 tactics

Savvy Navvy · navigation app for boats

First round 3x oversubscribed in 6 days; ~£1M rounds since; 2,500 investors

After walking away from a VC term sheet, and with ~10,000 users on the app, ran an equity crowdfunding round on Seedrs (now Republic). Before going live, agreed terms and valuation with a handful of pre-identified angels (2-3 put in six figures each per round); everyone else invests on the same terms, no preferred shares, from as little as ~10. Made a pitch video plus docs and financials; publicly stated what the money would fund. Gave perks: all first-round investors got a Savvy Navvy sailing jacket; another round gave 3-year subscriptions. Set a minimum (enough for the next 12-18 months) and a maximum (to cap dilution) and closed the round when the max was hit. Used the money mainly for B2C marketing. Later taps the 2,500 investors (mostly boaters) for expertise, e.g. logistics or marketing advice. Investors can sell on the platform's secondary market.

Looked great in the test, fell apart at full rollout; support grief erased gains

To cut drop-off at account creation, ran an experiment that skipped sign-up and created an anonymous account under the hood. Rolled it to 100% after strong early results and ran it for quite some time.

Instructors send students to it first; founder says no numbers

Not an affiliate program and no kickbacks (instructors don't want to look like sales reps). Instructors get the app free and their students get a discount. The team works closely with them: webinars, collecting feedback, instructors as beta users who get every new feature first. Built instructor-requested features, e.g. an in-app three-point fix for when GPS fails, which no competing app has. Signed American Sailing for the US. Similar programs with chandleries/boat shops, using in-store presence and QR codes.

Biggest win of the year; ad spend now paid back as soon as it's spent

Using US rules that allow payment outside the App Store, added a two-year subscription on web checkout: $183 vs $129/year ($75 off two years, ~30%). Pitched at boat owners who keep boats for years. Revenue per user over two years is about the same, but collected up front, so marketing spend is recovered immediately.

Won Seedrs Entrepreneur of the Year, voted by investors; enabled repeat rounds

From the first investor letter, promised to share 'the good, the bad, and the ugly' and keeps a direct, open line with the long tail of investors behind the platform. Publicly states what each round's money is for and reports back 12-18 months later before asking for more.

Showed the problem went far beyond ocean racers; founder says it convinced him

Before building, went to the UK south coast with a clipboard (people answer questions from someone with a clipboard) and spent hours walking every pontoon, interviewing sailors, motorboaters, kayakers and paddleboarders about how they go boating and what stops them going out more. Keeps talking to customers per region for new features (e.g. Italy has no tides).

Many more manufacturers came asking than expected; now a B2B business

Walks every boat show without paying for a stand (stands are priced per boat-meter). Met Arc Boats, an LA electric wake boat maker building its helm from scratch, and partnered to supply charts and navigation tech for its helm display. Put out a press release. Followed up with boat builders and new marine electronics makers who build their own software stack or want a customizable one.

Founder says it feeds a consumer-to-manufacturer flywheel; no numbers

Deals vary by model: a high-end pontoon boat comes with 12 months of Savvy Navvy paid by the manufacturer (e.g. via QR code); other deals bundle an extended trial; some get a gray-labeled flavor of the app showing boat-specific info, including in CarPlay on pontoon/entertainment boats. Manufacturers promote the app. The loop: consumers ask builders for Savvy Navvy support, builders integrate it, buyers see it on the boat as validation.

Uses two business models by geography: freemium in the US (a free product that manufacturers can also tailor), no free tier outside the US. Details deferred to the live stream.
