Getting users
Virality and word-of-mouth tactics
Sharing loops, invites, watermarks and other ways apps got users to bring in more users. 79 tactics from 56 founder interviews.
Apps with strong word of mouth mostly built it into the product: something visual worth filming or screenshotting, a personal link each user posts, or a free version generous enough that free users spread it. Add-on referral rewards and share buttons were less reliable, and viral reach did not always bring paying users.
- NGL built anonymous messaging on Instagram Story links that every user posts, reaching 150M monthly users; Lobby said 60% of new users in Israel got five friends on day one, against 20% elsewhere, with about double the 90-day retention.NGL (1)NGL (2)Lobby
- BoldVoice's free accent-guessing web tool drew about 100K people in Korea the day after an investor posted it, and when Opal went freemium its paying share fell from 20% to 9% while daily users passed 1M and revenue grew.BoldVoiceOpal
- Visual features got shared: RevenueCat's screenshot-friendly mobile home screen showed up about 100x more on X overnight, and Jungle's on-screen growing tree lifted questions answered by about 70% and drew questions from people nearby in libraries.RevenueCatJungle
- Riding a trend worked for some: a 14-year-old's overnight meme game got about 2M downloads in a month and reached #2 on the App Store, and Copia's crash-out button slideshow drew 12-13M views and 10-15K downloads.DaGameCopia
- Referral mechanics were mixed: GlamUp's invite-three-friends unlock drew about 1.6M code requests but barely changed conversion, and Life360's share buttons and gifted subscriptions gave no lift, though about 40% of its users arrive by word of mouth.GlamUpLife360
- Reach did not always pay: Coconote's brain-rot side site had a 41M-view video but no paying users, and a BoldVoice crying trend reached about 300M views for one creator but brought lower-intent users than paid ads.pdftobrainrot.comBoldVoice
