Instagram marketing tactics
Instagram Reels, accounts, creators and ads: tactics app founders used on Instagram and what came of them. 203 tactics from 58 founder interviews.
Most founders used Instagram through Reels from paid creators or their own accounts, usually one repeatable format of a hook followed by an app demo, cross-posted with TikTok, often with comment-to-DM links and later ads on the winners. At volume this produced some of the largest view and revenue counts in these interviews. The weak spots were formats that drew views but few buyers, flat-fee influencer deals, and Reels reaching audiences outside the target market.
- Halo AI had creators on fresh accounts post one prank-and-demo format across TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and Shorts, reporting 600M views in 60 days and $300K MRR in 45 days.Halo AI (1)Halo AI (2)
- Platforms compared differently: Runify's 9 Reels a day averaged 5-10K views, about 1 in 10 passing 500K, while TikTok volume sank views; Payout found Instagram beat TikTok, but StudyFetch said some viral Reels converted close to nothing.RunifyPayoutStudyFetch
- Comment-to-DM links worked well: about half of those who commented on Payout's videos clicked the auto-sent link and 6.7% of downloads paid, and Pushcroll sent about 90K DMs with 33% click-through.PayoutPushcroll
- Views did not always mean buyers: Stronger's fade-in Reel drew an estimated 150-300M views at low conversion, Coconote's brainrot tool got 100-200M views but about $25K, and Copia's name-only video was estimated to miss 20-30% of downloads.StrongerCoconoteCopia
- Pushcroll paid influencers $800 flat for four videos and got about 138K views but only 200-500 downloads, losing about $2K; Nomadtable paid $1-2 per 1,000 views with no retainer after proving its format, signing 60-70 creators.PushcrollNomadtable
- Winners often became ads: Praycreen ran viral TikToks as Instagram ads at $0.70-0.80 average US cost per install, and Sway AI ran its main influencer's videos as ads from his page, reaching about $2M a year by the host's figure.PraycreenSway AI
