What they did

Doof was built as a public challenge: make a mobile app in 30 days and take it from $0 to $1,000, marketed on Instagram, TikTok and Twitter. After a week of trying new formats with nothing popping, Jack went back to his tried-and-true slideshow format with a food meme ('people who eat like this feel good, sleep good, and poop good') and the app only mentioned in the caption ('feel good today by downloading Doof'). Goal: content that doesn't look like an ad. Used a standard Superwall paywall template.

What happened

One slideshow hit 5M views and brought 'a bunch of downloads' that month; Doof reached $1,000 revenue within 30 days.

“So for Doof, I ended up reusing, cuz I was pretty lazy, the same format. I tried a few things before I went back to this like tried-and-true format”

“So all the videos I try to make, they try to make them look not like ads. That's like the main goal, I guess, with organic format, cuz people aren't going to watch it if it's an an ad.”

“and that was when I made a food diary app called Doof. Successfully got to $1,000 within 30 days.”
