Use Facebook app notifications to spread a radio app virally
Peaked at 130K new users a day but earned $100; Facebook shut it down

What they did
Around 2007-08, after a failed social network for radio listeners, Streema built on the Facebook app platform and used its notification APIs to send notifications on behalf of the app, creating viral loops. Facebook quotas throttled it and reset every 20-30 days, so growth came in bursts. Caught about 4 months of it before Facebook shut it down.
What happened
Some days brought ~130,000 new daily users, but users came from poorly monetizing countries: about $100 in ad revenue at peak. Ended when Facebook shut the channel down.

Sub Club by RevenueCat · VC Funding vs. Bootstrapping for Subscription Apps — Martín Siniawski, Podcast App“For For us, it was like there were like notification APIs you could use to like send notifications.”
“So we, I think we caught 4 months of that, and we did have some days in which we had like 130,000 daily active new users through this crazy viral loops, but they had quotas and they would close the quotas and they would like reset back after 20 days or 30 days.”
“The problem was they ended up shutting it down, and also the users were coming from countries that weren't monetizing great.”
