Making Web2App Work: From Basic Landing Pages to Complex Sales Funnels — Nathan Hudson, Perceptycs

David Barnard and RevenueCat CEO Jacob Eiting talk with Nathan Hudson (Perceptycs, a web-to-app growth agency) about what web2app is (any web touchpoint before the app: quizzes, blog posts, webinars, plain sales pages), why small apps benefit (cash flow, cheaper learning, UTM attribution) and why big apps do (fees, funnel control, new audiences). Nathan describes a webinar/VSL funnel for a ~£200/year sensitive-topic app, the SKAN-to-AEM migration on Meta, mirroring in-app onboarding on web, event feedback to ad networks, and how to design quiz interludes, social proof and personalization.

A high-priced app on a sensitive topic · B2C · Perceptycs client

Agency says it worked, especially long-form on YouTube; no numbers shared

For a ~£200/year app on an emotionally sensitive topic whose audience needed time to commit (and skewed older, often on desktop Facebook), built a webinar funnel instead of pushing to a trial or going freemium. Recorded a VSL/masterclass-style webinar. Ads ran on Meta (Facebook, Instagram) and YouTube; YouTube ads were clips and edits of the webinar that sent people to watch the full-length version. Ads did not mention the app, only the problem and the solution. Viewing was gated (sign-up); tested making it feel live with a session 'starting every 5 minutes'. The app was pitched at the end of the webinar. Done early, not at scale, because the audience needed longer to convert while app campaigns needed a fast trial-start postback.

Agency rarely sees a profitable in-app flow fail when mirrored on web

Before building web funnels, ask why (fees alone are not enough; the web must be profitable on its own) and what the current in-app funnel looks like. If the app has a long onboarding, rebuild it on web first, then tweak: remove some questions, add problem statements matched to the traffic. If it is a utility app with a hard paywall, don't build a long quiz; use a landing page with checkout (product, screenshots, paywall). Budget time, dev resources and money; don't dilute app spend if it is only just reaching learning phases and privacy thresholds, bring new spend to web instead. Low-intent traffic and higher-ticket products fit web best; a $29.99/year product can stay in-app.

Early-stage apps Perceptycs has worked with

Payouts in days, not ~60; about $1K of spend can teach you something

For early apps trying to get a first paid channel beyond ASO: send ad traffic to a web checkout rather than the App Store. Web payments (e.g. Stripe) pay out almost same day and keep ~95% net of fees, instead of waiting up to ~60-65 days for App Store proceeds, so a small budget (~$1-3K/month) can be recycled into the next test. UTM parameters give clear attribution without an MMP or SKAN thresholds, so ~$1K can produce learnings, whereas guest would not launch an app promotion campaign on a 1-2K budget.

Much more accurate; big accounts fully migrated

Moved Meta app promotion campaigns from SKAdNetwork measurement to Meta's Aggregated Event Measurement (AEM). About 8-10 months before recording AEM was weak; 4-5 months before it was only recommended for smaller clients; by recording it was strong enough that some big accounts were fully migrated. Under SKAN, apps spending under ~10K/month missed privacy thresholds and postbacks.

Guest calls influencers and affiliates 'amazing with web'; no numbers

Instead of sending influencer or affiliate traffic straight to the App Store, where it is hard to attribute, send it to a dedicated landing page per creator with UTM parameters, then through the web funnel. Also: first get existing ad channels (Meta, Google search and YouTube, TikTok) working on web, then expand to similar channels, then to unlike ones.

Larger apps Perceptycs works with

Reaches new user pools and keeps data on non-buyers; no numbers

On the same ad channel, an app-install campaign, an app trial-start campaign and a web sales/conversion campaign reach different pockets of users; people who click app ads click many app ads, and some people only click web ads. Web also lets you capture lower-intent traffic with blog articles, webinars and gated lead magnets, collect contact data from people who don't buy today, retarget them on other networks, and reach older and desktop users. Best for larger apps that have maxed out app campaigns and for low-intent or high-ticket offers.

Standard practice; value-based bidding tried with no results yet

Install the pixel, and on Meta also send events server-to-server with the Conversions API. Send as many funnel events as possible (sign-up, trial start, purchase) to see conversion at each step, and optimize for the most valuable event you can reliably get. Also experimenting with value optimization, sending plan value (monthly, annual, lifetime) instead of just events.

Design the quiz around the questions the user has (does it work, is it for people like me), not the ones you want to ask; a question can answer theirs (Calm's 'sleep or focus?' explains what the app does). Between questions add 'interludes' of three kinds: evidence (charts, graphs, testimonials), reassurance of known anxieties (Headway's 'How often do you worry?' followed by 'lots of people worry'; time-to-value charts), and functionality (what the app does and how). Choose social proof by the user's objection: small apps should use a testimonial from someone like the user rather than 'join thousands'. Personalize on context that matters emotionally (e.g. job role for a focus app), not just echoing answers; don't over-invest, returns diminish.

~500 downloads a day; learned a lot without needing scale

Launched a very rough version of new apps on Android, where background organic traffic brought ~500 downloads a day, and watched the session replays of all of those users. Not statistically significant; the goal was to start the learning and iteration loop cheaply.

Screens out fake cards; small net effect on conversion

A web2app developer replaced a credit-card-gated free trial with a $1 one-month intro period. Charging $1 validates that the card is real and costs money, cutting users on fake or bouncing cards who consume the service and then fail to pay.

Running on the web a money-back guarantee as an alternative to a free trial, as an experiment. Guest notes this is common on web and hard to do in-app.
