What they did
The first version made users go through sportsbooks, input their own bets and check whether each was good. Realized users just wanted to be given the right picks ('the answers to the test'). Shut down all marketing and spent four months on engineering and design only, rebuilding from scratch around pre-analyzed daily picks from their ML models. Relaunched April 15.
What happened
Conversion to paid rose from 13% to over 50%; MRR went from $1,700 at relaunch to a $40K peak 2.5 months later; now ~$30K/month and ~$3.30 per download.
- Stage
- Launch (post-launch pivot)
- Effort
- 4 months of full rebuild with no marketing
This shipped together with other changes, so the result can't be credited to this alone.
“We realized that what our customers actually wanted was just to be given the right answers to the test, and not necessarily go through the sports books and input their bets and check for themselves if it was a good bet or not.”
“So, we took four months to rebuild the app, no marketing, just engineering and design work”
