Sell lifetime deals until you can pay a developer, then switch to monthly

Funded a developer hire; now steady at $12-13K a month on subscriptions

What they did

First sold the rough script as a one-time fee and realized it wasn't defensible. Without license validation or user management he had to keep selling a one-time/lifetime deal for a couple of years. Once he had enough money, he hired a developer on Upwork to polish the product; it is now a monthly subscription (about $15/month) sold through Gumroad.

What happened

Lifetime-deal revenue paid for the developer; the subscription business now makes ~$12-13K/month
