What they did
Journal layer inside each workout: user logs reps and weights (distance for cardio). Next time that movement comes up, recommended weights are prefilled from the logged data. After each workout a recap shows progress since starting (e.g. '62% increase in dumbbell bench press'), PRs across movements, and journal history lives on the profile, building stored state that makes the app sticky.
What happened
70-75% of users use the journal each workout; correlation with retention observed (no numbers).
In their words
Sub Club by RevenueCat · The Art of Driving Retention Through Product – Ben Gammon, Ladder“You input the data, then the next time you come in and like for that specific movement, let's call it an RDO or a bench press. And the recommended weights come back into play because we've now personalized it by putting in that existing weight.”
“as you build state, it becomes sticky.”
