Hire the biggest creator in your niche as a salaried team member with equity
50-100K link clicks a month from one creator; founder calls it the core of go-to-market
Workedinfluencerpartnerships
What they did
Before Sunflower had any revenue or monetization, hunted down the #1 sobriety influencer (Eric, 'Mr. Impulsive', 50-100M views/month, biggest on Facebook Reels then TikTok) and made him 'VP of Sobriety' with salary and equity instead of paying per post. Pitched it as a mission and a go-to-market role, not a post buy. He links the app in all his content, sits in the company Slack where the team shares user feedback ('this app saved my life'), knows the roadmap, and iterates on how he drives link clicks. Supplemented by a few smaller influencers and paid ads. Guest says the same was done at Reddit and Replicate; for bootstrappers suggests pitching a big creator a 50/50 partnership where you build an app for their audience.
What happened
50-100K link clicks per month from Eric alone; host estimates ~$0.10 CPM. Guest says it is more defensible (creator won't switch to competing apps) and cheaper than managing 30 small influencers.
- Stage
- Pre-launch (pre-revenue through ~$1M ARR)
- Effort
- Ongoing salaried employee relationship, venture-funded, since pre-revenue
In their words
The Superwall Podcast · Koby Conrad - I speedran an ai app from 0 to $1m/yr in 10 months“when our app was basically we didn't even have any revenue, we went and we got him to come and be our VP of Sobriety”
“And if you're able to like get them onto your team, and like give them like salary and equity, and get them like hyped about a mission”
“we get like, I think somewhere between like 50 to 100K link clicks, um, every single month, just from Eric”
“We have Eric in our Slack channel, not just like outside and be like, "Hey, here's money. Thanks for posting about us."”
