LingQ's 8 tactics

LingQ · B2C · language learning app

181M views, 1.5M subscribers; these users subscribe at a higher rate

Co-founder Steve Kaufmann (speaks ~20 languages, the 'OG of online polyglots') started a YouTube channel in 2010 because SEO and his blog weren't getting LingQ found and they never raised money to promote aggressively. He posts a new video every week about language learning and his method, still coming up with every concept himself at 80, with staff handling the files. Early videos promoted lingq.com directly. Kept going for years even when views were low.

Conversion rate went up every time limits were tightened; no numbers given

Started with a relatively high free limit, hoping users would fall in love and pay. Because language learning is aspirational (like a gym membership), many users try it for a day or two and disappear long before hitting a high limit. Tightened the free limits several times over the years.

Founder says stickiness rose as import got easier; no numbers

Through the user forum and support requests, noticed that successful users found content they cared about and imported it into LingQ (any content can become a lesson). Many users find self-importing too much friction, so built browser extensions and ways to pull content in from YouTube, Netflix and other sources.

LingQ · B2C · language learning app

Founder says performance improved, which helps conversion; no numbers

Around 2017, as server activity grew and things got slow, culled a large batch of old dormant accounts and their data (roughly 500K accounts). Given how the system was set up, this improved performance.

Tends to be good for the app, founder says; no numbers

Beyond the co-founder's own channel, LingQ does collaborations with and sponsorships of other YouTubers.

LingQ · B2C · language learning app

Does okay; far less effective than YouTube

Co-founder Steve Kaufmann had a blog before YouTube, and LingQ still runs blogs. Relying on Google to rank you made it hard to get found early on.
