How to Boost Retention with Subscription Lifecycle Messaging — Alice Muir, Phiture
Alice Muir, senior growth consultant at Phiture, on CRM for subscribers rather than just win-backs: premium onboarding (an in-app message fixed a finance app's instant cancellations), trial goals, escalating email discount drips (Headspace), in-app messages as a paywall-testing proxy with region-based prices (dating app), correlation analysis, surveying disengaging users (period tracker found pregnant users), commitment reminders, and win-backs via loss reminders, screenshot capture and resurfaced creations, with discounts used sparingly.

An investment advice app · B2C · Phiture client
A finance app selling premium specialized reports saw people convert and cancel straight away. User feedback showed subscribers didn't know where to find the promised reports. Fix: a simple in-app message on becoming premium ('Hi, and welcome to the premium experience. Here's where you go and check out your first report') that deep-links to the reports. General rule: build a separate onboarding for premium users focused on the paid-only features.
A plant care app · B2C · Phiture client
For a 7-day trial, scope out seven days' worth of communications, and give the trial onboarding an explicit goal: by trial end, users have completed specific premium conversion events, showing they've understood the value of premium. Being applied at a plant health app.
Headspace · B2C · meditation app
Find the average time from download to upgrade (e.g. 7 days). For users who haven't upgraded by then, send an email with a small discount (e.g. 10%), then increase the discount in later emails (2 days, 5 days, a week later) if they still haven't upgraded. Headspace ran this ~2-3 years before the episode.
Phiture · B2B · mobile growth consultancy
Choose a CRM/in-app messaging tool that allows custom in-app message designs. Build full-screen messages that look like native paywalls and A/B test them as a proxy for paywall tests; also test banner and interstitial formats, scratchcard-style gamified messages, and video. Caveat: messages depend on servers loading, so some users don't receive them; keep crucial early-onboarding paywalls native.
A dating app · B2C · Phiture client
A dating app with region-specific prices had a CRM tool but no paywall A/B testing tool. Phiture built a single in-app message design as one campaign, pulling the price point dynamically from the user's region attribute, to test paywall and conversion messaging across all regions at once.
Keakr · B2C · rap recording studio app
For apps with enough data, run correlation analysis (e.g. Amplitude's correlation score) between core events and becoming a subscriber. At a rap pocket-studio app, users who entered the recording studio and used a particular filter or advanced editing feature were more likely to convert. Then build segments of users showing parts of that behavior and push them along the same path with CRM. Registration in apps where it's optional is itself a high-intent signal for upsell.
A period tracking app · B2C · Phiture client
Define the expected usage frequency (e.g. weekly); users dropping to every 2-3 weeks are disengaging but still have a need. At a period tracking app, a survey of disengaging users found a segment who were pregnant and no longer needed tracking. Recommendation: keep them with content (the app's women's health research), and plan re-onboarding and habit reinforcement for when they return.
Headspace · B2C · meditation app
Headspace tested a commitment campaign: collect the reasons a user joined ('Here are the reasons why you joined Headspace'), then resurface them later ('Remember, you wanted to reduce stress...') to reinforce the habit.
VSCO · B2C · photo editing app
When a member cancels, remind them of the membership benefits they'll lose and create urgency: 'you've got seven days left of this particular filter'. Also remind them of features and usage they enjoyed, and of upcoming releases they won't have access to.
A creative app · B2C · Phiture client
In a creative app, when a free or cancelled user screenshotted a creation made with a premium feature they were trying out, the app detected it and messaged: 'Look, this is actually better in high resolution' / subscribe if you want to download it.
A photography app · B2C · Phiture client
A photography app resurfaced images users had created in the past as a celebration of their membership, reinforcing the value proposition for people at risk of churning or who had churned.
Headspace · B2C · meditation app
Once someone knows how to meditate, a timer is Headspace's competition. Headspace added mindfulness for exercise and sleep, new use cases that keep adding value and avoid boredom with the core proposition.
MyFitnessPal · B2C · calorie tracking app
At the end of each day's food diary, MyFitnessPal says 'If every day was like today, here's where you would be in 5 weeks', a personalized projection in the free tier that taps goal setting. Paired with constantly updated blog content (recipes, exercises).
MyFitnessPal · B2C · calorie tracking app
The host, a lapsed MyFitnessPal subscriber still using the free tier, receives full-screen or quarter-screen interstitials that lead to a paywall or promote an unvisited feature ('Did you know, having an accountability partner...') with a call to action into that part of the app.
Headspace · B2C · meditation app
Headspace emailed the host, a lapsed subscriber: 'Come back, 40% off, 7 days only if you re-subscribe'. Guest's caution: discounts work but cap margin and can attract low-intent subscribers; consider holding discounts until a user passes the average number of renewals.
