Subscription App Growth Is Getting Brutal (RevenueCat Data Explained)

Steve P. Young and RevenueCat's David Barnard walk through the State of Subscription Apps 2026 report (115K apps, $16B): top 10% grew 306% while the median grew 5.3%; hard paywalls reach 10% D35 download-to-paid vs 2% for freemium without worse retention; AI apps earn more per payer but churn 30% faster; 55% of 3-day trials cancel on day 0. Side stories: Steve's hard-paywall and 3-day weekly tests, David's Weather Up, Coconote's trial extension at cancel, Mojo's weekly launch paywall, Duolingo's shorter trial and 'Try for $0.00'.

Install-to-trial 13% vs 6% with the X; trial-to-paid barely changed

On one App Masters app, compared a hard paywall (no X to dismiss) against the same paywall with an X. Tracked via daily Mixpanel emails. Steve's view: works best when the app is niche and solves one problem well; he is moving more apps to hard paywalls and tells people with low trial-start rates to 'do a hard paywall'.

A niche AI app · B2C · host's own app

3x revenue from the same number of downloads

The niche AI app first offered a yearly plan with a 7-day free trial; people started trials but cancelled. Switched to a weekly plan with a 3-day free trial. Steve's rule: weekly for one-time-use apps (most AI apps), yearly for long-term-use apps, avoid monthly.

'Continue' did better on iOS; 'Start free trial' did well on Android. One data point

Tested the paywall call-to-action text 'Continue' against 'Start free trial'. 'Continue' is also the most common CTA across RevenueCat paywalls.

Clients say 14 days worked much better than 7; no numbers

Start with a 7-day trial on the paywall; when the user taps X, instead of showing a discount, show 'Try it on 14' (a 14-day trial). A few App Masters clients found 14-day trials beat 7-day. David suggests the same shape for testing 30-day trials: keep the 3- or 7-day trial as default and offer the longer trial only at X-out or cancellation.

Coconote · B2C · note-taking app for students

16% of would-be cancellers took the longer trial

On the web (easier to control the cancel flow there), when a user went to cancel their free trial, show: 'it sounds like maybe you just need more time with the app' and extend the free trial.

Mojo · B2C · video editing app

About half of conversions come after day 0 vs ~15-20% industry-wide

Generous freemium tier. After a user declines the first paywall, show a paywall on app launch once a week to those free users.

Duolingo · B2C · language learning app

Doubled the experiment rate and raised conversions overall

Moved from a 14-day free trial to a 7-day free trial so paid-conversion results of experiments come back sooner.

Duolingo · B2C · language learning app

Worked well for Duolingo; not guaranteed for other apps

Paywall call-to-action reads 'Try for $0.00' rather than 'Try for free'. App Masters also tried it (no result given).

Rise Science · B2C · sleep app

Web became where the app-first sleep app finally found success; no numbers

App onboarding jumps straight to the solution because downloaders already believe they have a problem. The web funnel instead sells the problem at length (you're tired all the time, etc.), since web visitors are in e-commerce, read-up mode.

An app with little search traffic · B2C · founder Steve talked to

Over $10K MRR, all from web traffic

The app's market had little App Store search (ASO) traffic, so the founder built a web funnel and sent all traffic there. Steve's advice: start with ASO/Apple Search Ads, move to web once those don't take off and you still believe in the product.

Fabulous · B2C · habit building app

Replaces what would be a full-time analyst job; no numbers

AI agents search the App Store for new competitors, track known competitors, assemble which of their ads seem to be working, and generate reports, so the team can react to fast followers.

Weather Up · B2C · weather app

Few took it and few of those paid; being replaced

Hard paywall with no X. When a user left the app from the paywall, a local push notification fired immediately: 'try it for seven days'.

App Masters · 2026-03-14

Put an X on the hard paywall; tapping it gives a 7-day reverse trial that does not auto-convert (no payment), clearly explained; after 7 days the app locks again. Planned for Weather Up's next update, replacing the push-notification win-back.

Weather Up · B2C · weather app

~$100K in the update year with almost no ads; halved the next year without updates

A big 2024 update of the weather app got it featured by Apple and covered by the press. Almost no paid ads. The next year there were no updates and no advertising.

Practitioner pattern · David Barnard (RevenueCat employee; RevenueCat publishes the report and sells paywall, web-purchase and Customer Center tools)

Billing-error cancellations drop about a third (31% of cancellations are billing errors)

In Google Play Console, turn on the grace period, and also suspend the subscription while billing keeps retrying after the grace period ends (account hold), per Google's developer help docs on billing issues. Add in-app messaging about billing problems too.

Practitioner pattern · David Barnard (RevenueCat employee; RevenueCat publishes the report and sells paywall, web-purchase and Customer Center tools)

Median 10% of downloads pay by day 35 vs 2% freemium; retention no worse

RevenueCat data across 115K apps: hard-paywall apps vs freemium apps. David's caveats: freemium can still be right when a free base builds habit, word of mouth and later conversion (Duolingo, Mojo), but costly-to-serve apps (AI, data-heavy) struggle with freemium.
