I Left College to Build This Niche App (Now I Make $20K/Month)

Ethan, a 19-year-old college dropout and former national wrestling champion, built CutCoach, an iOS app that gives combat-sport athletes a science-based weight-cut plan, with Cursor and ChatGPT. After a failed coach-first beta with his wrestling club he pivoted to athlete-direct plans and launched in September at the start of wrestling season. Growth came from small organic posts that converted high-intent viewers, then DMing small TikTok/Instagram creators, then running those creator videos as paid ads. Claims $20K in a month; ~39K downloads.

10-15 downloads a day from posts with only 200-500 views
“An example of the first video that I posted organically was a video where I showed what a UFC fighter looked like on a weight cut and what they looked like after their weight cut. I also added a call to action at the end of the video to give users an incentive to download my app.”

Club ignored the coach version; athlete-direct relaunch is the version that grew
“The first version of the app was basically an app where the coach was supposed to give the weight cut plans to the athletes. However, I realized that there was a lot of friction using this concept, and my wrestling club didn't use the app.”

Demand peaked mid-season; ~39K downloads in about 6 months
“Right when we launched the app, wrestling season just started. Our revenue, you know, is climbing up as we started to figure out marketing. By that time, we were in the middle of wrestling season, there was a big demand for our app since a lot of the combat sport athletes needed to cut weight.”
