Make the app free to download and charge $5 a month instead of $4.99 once

Biggest revenue jump ever; growth took off from the 2021 switch

What they did

Cardstock launched as a $4.99 one-time paid download (lifetime access). Kyle doubted anyone would pay $5 recurring, but people who tried to recruit him kept telling him to switch to a free trial. In 2021 he made the app free with subscriptions: $5/month, $50/year and $99 lifetime (lifetime offered first). He now says there is no reason to charge upfront; if you insist on paying up front, go free with a hard paywall instead.

What happened

Revenue 'exploded'; the biggest jump on the lifetime revenue chart lines up with the 2021 subscription switch, with a small hit at first. Downloads did not jump much at the same time.

“And then, people were like, "Just make it $5 a month, people will buy it." And I was like, "People are paying $5 for lifetime access forever right now." And people were like, "Nope, they'll buy it." And then so, I did it and switched to that, and it exploded from there.”
