What they did

Free location sharing is a ~10-times-a-day utility that keeps the app top of mind; paid tier sells safety/peace of mind that people actually use. Core map, location history and place alerts stay free (some limits on free location history). Chosen because carriers (AT&T, Verizon) and later Apple Find My offered competing location products, so the only way to compete was a better product for free. Founders found people said they would pay for emergency safety alone but didn't ('out of sight, out of mind').

What happened

Guest calls the free-engagement plus paid-safety combo the company's 'secret monetization sauce'; 80M+ active users, ~$400M revenue, ~1 in 8 families paying.

“So we basically locked in on the strategy of freemium, free location, pay for safety.”

“People said, "Yes," but they wouldn't. So the thing we realized with location, that was like a 10 time a day use case, and people actually will pay for safety”
