How Life360 grows

23 tactics and 32 figures from 2 interviews.

A family location-sharing app, Life360 grew by giving everyday location sharing away free and charging for safety features, and held off charging at all until 10 million active users. The guest reported 80M+ active users, about $400M in revenue and roughly 1 in 8 families paying, and the company turns down changes that take value from free users even when tests show more revenue.

Summary written 2026-09-26 from the tactics below. Figures are as founders stated them.

Cutting to 6-12 hours doubled subs from that hook; not shipped to protect free users

Free users see the last 2 days of circle location history. A test cut free history to 6 or 12 hours, which doubled subscribers coming from the location-history hook. Leadership declined to ship it because it makes the feature much less useful and can make people less safe; a free, engaged user base drives network effects and word of mouth (parents telling parents). An early test by the guest that took value from free users showed a big revenue upside and was vetoed by the exec team ('freemium bill of rights'). Rule: only gate features that are expensive to provide (e.g. roadside assistance).

Doubled new Platinum subscribers without losing a single Gold subscriber

Three tiers (Silver, Gold, Platinum); most users pick Gold and the paywall can't explain everything, so it normally leads with Gold. A machine-learning model using ~900 data points per user (profile, behavior, previous experiment results) predicts propensity to buy Platinum (wider roadside assistance range, identity protection, more services). High-propensity users are shown Platinum instead of Gold. Part of an ML targeting/orchestration layer built in the last year that also targets promotions, feature education, push notifications and in-app messages.

About $20M+ a year from Placer.ai; still some bad press

Previously sold de-identified raw GPS feeds to third parties for location-based ad targeting (filtering sensitive locations). Stopped after repeated bad press and regulator/FTC scrutiny. Now sells aggregated data by census block through Placer.ai (e.g. a retailer sees '72% of visitors came from this census block', no raw GPS lines). Rule: be transparent and the CEO uses any data product himself.

Grew to 80M+ active users and ~$400M revenue; about 1 in 8 families pay

Free location sharing is a ~10-times-a-day utility that keeps the app top of mind; paid tier sells safety/peace of mind that people actually use. Core map, location history and place alerts stay free (some limits on free location history). Chosen because carriers (AT&T, Verizon) and later Apple Find My offered competing location products, so the only way to compete was a better product for free. Founders found people said they would pay for emergency safety alone but didn't ('out of sight, out of mind').

Holdout showed no harm; banners drive little performance and CEO wants them gone

About a year before the episode, after ~16 years of subscription-only revenue, added home-screen banner ads for free users using their own ad unit (ad exchange demand, some AdMob testing). Team ran a holdout group to check the ads' effect. Subscribing removes ads.

Called a huge success; many users made pet profiles; no numbers

Launched a pet profile (set up a profile for your dog or cat; if it runs away, send an alert so nearby Life360 users look out for it). To cut through banner and push blindness, a feature called 'Peekaboo' showed an animated dog popping up on app open asking the user to pet it; tapping opened the pet profile feature.

Tile owners retain better than non-owners; Pet GPS requires a subscription

Buying a Pet GPS or Tile tracker leads people to sign up for Life360; Pet GPS requires a subscription, so device sales double as subscriber acquisition. Devices are not a loss leader but pricing indexes toward reaching more users rather than maximizing device margin. Tiles extend use cases (e.g. in a young child's backpack before they have a phone).

Failed across the board; parents don't share inside apps

About 40% of users found Life360 through someone telling them (e.g. parents at school pickup or in school chats). The team built in-app ways to replicate that: share buttons, offers to gift a Silver subscription or get one yourself, and other variants.

Founder says charging early would have killed them; no direct numbers

Set a somewhat arbitrary rule to ignore monetization until 10 million active users, later than most companies, because location was expected to become a commodity (carriers, later Find My). Era also had no in-app purchase or push notifications.

80-90% of chases are false alarms; old battery bugs still hurt trust

Define what can't break (location accuracy, battery drain, life-safety features) versus what can. Killing a user's battery is a one-way door: users remember even after the fix. Suspected regressions are 'guilty till proven innocent' and always investigated. Guest admits the company swung too far into program management process around this.

Removing it would cut a significant share of new subscribers; no numbers

Life360 avoids adding friction to the free experience but keeps a paywall in onboarding: one extra screen that, if removed, would cut off a significant amount of new subscribers.

No numbers; first-week activation strongly predicts users still around a year later

The first 7 days matter most: creating/joining a circle and inviting people correlates highly with being active on day 7 and a year later. Orchestrated onboarding and mid-boarding steps: e.g. on day 2, if a user hasn't used location history, prompt 'What was John up to yesterday?' using a real circle member's name. Increasingly targeted on specific behavior. Keep prompts contextual and personal rather than generic 'tap here to check out this feature'.

Too new to judge; founder says ask again in a year

Internal 'free user Bill of Rights' treated as a constitution only changeable at exec level. Rights include: core map, location history and place alerts must be free (the paywall can move a bit); no deceptive tactics or dark patterns; be transparent and notify users before changes; ads must not get in the way of the job to be done. Motivation: each small cut looks harmless in a holdout test, but 20+ cuts over years erode love and word of mouth in ways data can't show.

Size tests by absolute N, not percent of base: at ~100M users, 1% is ~1M people. For new or costly ideas, run a painted-door test (button that fails gracefully) on ~100 (even 10) users and accept ~70% certainty, then run the real test. Low-risk copy changes (headers, email headlines) can go to everyone to pick up 0.1% effects. Percent steps (1, 5, 10, 50%) are for rollouts, not tests.

Work in progress; no numbers given

Started with a dedicated growth team, then moved to a system where every team aligns behind top-line revenue and user-growth metrics, owns sub-metrics it can influence, and gets agentic AI tools, training and the mandate to run experiments. Product development functions have explicit growth owners; elsewhere self-selected 'builders' lead. A fellowship program lets anyone spend three months on making their team faster with technology instead of their normal job. Finance built tools to mine data for pricing and tiering insights. Revenue remains the core KPI teams are judged on.

Treat experiments as a learning portfolio with three levers: velocity (experiments shipped), win rate, and average win size. Current push: raise velocity with AI while holding win rate and average win stable. Measure the number of inconclusive tests and work to reduce it; losses are fine if they produce learnings. Predict experiment impact up front, then segment results after (e.g. lost overall but worked for suburban users with a dog and 1+ month tenure) to generate follow-up experiments. People who know the users interpret the data, not only automated systems.

About 80% of families with kids on the platform also have a pet, and non-family audiences often have pets too, so Life360 builds pet features (pet profile, Pet GPS tracker) to add value for those users and make them subscribe. A big churn reason is kids leaving for college; a pet tracker keeps the circle useful afterward. Also targeting the 'sandwich generation' with features for aging parents. Filter for new features: real problem, permission to solve it, big overlap with the existing audience; add to the main app rather than launching second apps.

Unknownfeature-developmentretention
Sub Club by RevenueCat · 2026-05-13

Rule for new features: if expensive to provide (e.g. roadside assistance, where Life360 pays for each tow), it is premium. Software features start free and are built as well as possible, then teams create a genuinely new paid layer on top rather than an artificial gate ('two free, rest paid'). Reorganizing so teams that historically owned free vs paid experiences think about both. Silver/Gold/Platinum tiers; the goal is to convert as many as possible, steer each to the right tier, and keep them subscribed.

Uber approached them; a broader Uber partnership is about to launch

A hackathon project became a landing notification: when you land, your circle is told. Uber saw it and proposed offering an Uber ride at that moment, which grew into a partnership with Uber's family product. Principle for ads/partnerships: 'do no harm' (non-intrusive, monitored via engagement and user metrics) and use location context (e.g. going to Costco) to give tailored offers instead of generic ads. Acquired ad company Nativo to extend targeting beyond the app.

Planned; could double revenue at 1/8 of paid-user performance

Modeled on Credit Karma's card matching: use known driving behavior to tell top drivers (e.g. top 5%) to share data with insurers and save money, and match hard-to-insure drivers with specialists. An earlier attempt into insurance with Allstate only produced a sliver of product. Could eventually replace subscriptions with free everything.
