A/B testing tactics
How app teams run experiments on paywalls, onboarding and pricing, and what they learned. 123 tactics from 60 founder interviews.
Most teams tested paywalls and pricing above all else, and those running many tests said only a small share won, from about one in four to one in ten. Several learned to judge tests on revenue after refunds and renewals rather than trial starts, after early winners turned into losses. Tools that let product teams ship paywall tests without engineers came up often as the way to test faster.
- Sociaaal runs about 100 tests a month and said roughly 2 in 20 win, with ARPU reportedly tripling in 18 months; Burner multiplied its paywall tests once product staff could ship them without engineers, winning about one in 4-5.SociaaalBurnerBuilt With Science
- BoldVoice's hard paywall and an unclosable discount offer both lifted trial starts, but refunds rose by more; it caught this by judging tests on revenue after refunds, waiting at least three weeks past trial start.BoldVoice (1)BoldVoice (2)BoldVoice (3)
- Price wins often faded: Mojo dropped a higher price that won on early revenue after 7-day cancellations ran far above baseline, and Reading.com found higher prices' early LTV gains did not hold, while $12.49 kept winning for years.MojoReading.com
- Small paywall changes sometimes paid off big: Sunflower's reminder screen brought 48% more revenue, Duolingo's Try for $0.00 button beat Try for free on trial starts and trial-to-paid, and Tinder credited a top-bar toggle test with about $50M.SunflowerDuolingoTinder
- Results depended on context: Celebs' test removing its onboarding paywall lost several times before winning big once the rest of the app changed, while Savvy Navvy's skip-sign-up winner fell apart at full rollout.CelebsSociaaalSavvy Navvy
- Plenty of tests moved nothing: Super Unlimited's modern store screenshots lost about 80% of tests, two Symmetry screen redesigns changed no metric, and Skylight's free trial brought no extra subscribers.Super UnlimitedSymmetrySkylight
