What they did
Five levers: pricing & packaging, design, messaging, placement & frequency, personalization. Never combine two levers in one variant until each was tested alone. Start with pricing & packaging (price, trial length and options, showing annual only with 'show all plans', vertical vs horizontal plan stacking); then design and messaging, lately more personalization.
What happened
Pricing & packaging tests are fastest, easiest and shift value perception more than expected.
“Every experiment that you run on your paywall falls into one of five categories, pricing and packaging, design, messaging, placement and frequency, and personalization.”
“So, whenever I start testing paywalls, my first go-to is pricing and packaging.”
