When users close the paywall, show a discount trial they can't close
Trial starts rose, but refunds rose by more; net loss
Failedpaywallpricingexperimentation
What they did
A/B tested a variant where the main paywall kept its dismiss button, but dismissing it showed an offer of X% off (size not disclosed) with no way to close it, so users had to start a trial at the discounted price to proceed.
What happened
Like the hard paywall, trial starts rose but refunds spiked by more than the gain; not rolled out.
- Stage
- growth
- Effort
- A/B test run long enough for refund data to mature
In their words
Sub Club by RevenueCat · Why BoldVoice Charged From Day 1 and Ignored the Duolingo Freemium Playbook — Anada Lakra“if you dismissed it, we gave people an offer of X percent off that they could not X out of. So they would have to start a trial.”
“So what I found is that anything that kind of forces or tricks people into starting a trial, you'll pay it when it comes to refunds.”
