Charge $10 a month with a 7-day free trial from launch day
Founder says it filtered out non-buyers and freed time for the product; no numbers

What they did
At launch (during YC, 2021) shipped a plain paywall: ~$10/month with a one-week free trial, no free tier. Rationale: willingness to pay reveals the ICP, so feedback and usage patterns come from people who will actually pay; avoiding paywall experimentation early let the team focus on onboarding and the core product. Paywall/pricing variants came later.
What happened
Helped identify who the customer is and kept the team focused on product; later evolved to annual-first pricing.

In their words
Sub Club by RevenueCat · Why BoldVoice Charged From Day 1 and Ignored the Duolingo Freemium Playbook — Anada Lakra“So charging for the product is a way to already figure out who that ICP is.”
“Let's just do the tried and true, just one week trial, simple $10 a month, so that we can focus our energy on actually building a good product experience, building a good onboarding, building the core product.”
