Show upgrade messages after people finish logging, never in the middle

Mid-task messages caused drop-off and fewer upgrades; after-task messages did better

What they did

Experiments compared delivering in-app messages during the food-logging flow versus after logging is finished or after the user marks the day complete. Post-completion messages celebrate what the user just accomplished and offer something in return.

What happened

Messages during logging caused attrition and no upgrades; after-completion timing worked better for users and revenue.

“If we deliver messages during that experience, like that's a obviously a pretty horrible user experience, but we could see it in the experiments that we ran that people attrited, and they didn't upgrade. But if we hit you with that message after you're finished logging, or after you've marked your day complete for the day, like those times are a lot more beneficial”
