What they did

Noticed users came back not for the AI coach but for a side feature: a daily prompt couples answer together. Extracted it and made it the mainstay, shown big on the home page ('daily discovery question'), designed as a daily habit trigger based on BJ Fogg's habit research. Took ~8 months of iteration.

What happened

Together with carrot/stick notifications and locked answers, D30 retention went from 4.2% to ~30% and then ~50%, above the guest's recollection of TikTok's ~40%.

An NayalBut we realized that it wasn't working. Like, even though we could get media presence, even though the retention went up to from 0.8 to 4.2, it was still dismal, and we realized we had to do something else. What we did is, this product had AI as its main feature, but along with that, we also launched something called the daily question, where we would give couples a daily prompt they could answer together.

An NayalNow, I know it's really common right now, and almost every other app does it, but back in that time, we were one of the few, like I think Paired was the only one apart from us which was doing it. We realized that people were coming back not for the AI coach, but for that daily question feature. They were coming for a daily way to connect with their partner, and we took that nugget, we extracted it from the product, and we made it the mainstay in the product.

An NayalWe put it right on the home page in big. We were like, "Hey, daily discovery question, this is the main thing we want you to come back for." Now, what I did regarding retention is I studied the work of a Stanford professor called BJ Fogg. He works a lot in habit formation, and we realized that every retention event needed to be tied with a trigger. It needed to have something which was a daily habit to call people back on a regular basis, and it needed to have a carrot-and-the-stick approach.

An NayalWhat was the carrot-and-the-stick approach in this case? In the morning, if you would answer or not answer your daily question when it was live, you would get a carrot notification reminding you, "Hey, come back, answer your question, take care of it." And as the day passed, if you did not answer your daily question, we would send a stick notification reminding you that, "Hey, it's time for you to answer the daily question. You're You're going to …
