V1 Sports · golf swing video analysis app
Ask every new user "Why are you here?" during sign-up
10-15% want a coach; those users subscribe far more often

What they did
Added a short (under a minute) onboarding question, framed like a clerk at a 'golf improvement store': how do you want to improve? Choices cover the few ways to improve (work with a coach, watch your own swing, analyze it, content). Accepts the extra friction ('positive friction') to filter out non-ideal users. Show the full menu of options even when a user names one goal.
What happened
Found that hundreds of people a week (10-15% of new registered users) want to find a coach, a need V1 wasn't serving, and those users are much more likely to subscribe to Golf+.
In their words
Sub Club by RevenueCat · How V1 Sports Doubled Revenue with Bold Bets — Alex Prasad, V1 Sports“what we found was that hundreds of people a week, maybe 10-15% of our all the new registered users, wanted to find a coach.”
“And it turns out those people, even though that's not what this plus, Golf+ premium, if you will, right, subscription gives you, are a much higher likelihood to subscribe as well.”
“The more I talk to other people in the space and people that I respect, talked a lot about positive friction and that you're going to filter out bad users sooner”
