How ChartDB grows

Their first product, an AI database client, needed database credentials and a local install; without trust from engineers, adoption stalled. ChartDB was redesigned around developer constraints: no signup, no sales calls, no credentials, no install. The user picks their database, runs one provided 'smart query' in their own client, pastes the JSON output and clicks import to see the full diagram. A more visual 'wow' result also helped.

After 3 weeks of development they prepared a launch, picked a day and posted ChartDB as a Show HN. His take on why it worked: developers appreciate open source they can test with no signup, and a unique wedge they had never seen before earns upvotes, which lift the post to the front page that many developers check every day.

The self-hosted open-source version is free, and developers find it through GitHub. At first they didn't monetize at all. When users started asking to work on diagrams with their team, which required complex real-time collaboration, that became the paid hosted cloud version. They watched usage patterns over time to decide what to charge for rather than guessing.

Didn't invent new channels; went where developers already are: GitHub (the open-source repo), Hacker News, Reddit (the selfhosted subreddit and other developer subreddits), plus sharing inside engineering teams.

Started from one specific value (a good-looking, interactive ERD of your database) rather than the full vision, iterated in small steps based on feedback, and deliberately ignored everything beyond making database visualization obvious.
