Ryan Thorpe - Meet The Guy Dominating The App Store

Ryan Thorpe ran a portfolio of 30+ health, fitness and productivity apps (Reflectly, Done/Do Habit, Mindfulness App) with 50M+ downloads. Reflectly reached ~$3-4M ARR on Facebook UGC ads at break-even; from 2020 they rolled up 30-35 under-monetized apps instead. Growth came from an in-house army of ~250 TikTok creators with strict briefs, organic-first posting, a 3-level TikTok ad structure, and spending ~75% of the yearly ad budget in January, when installs cost about half. Done hit #1 free app in the US on Jan 2-3 two years running. He sold most apps to Codion and now builds Flowed.

First deal paid back in 12-18 months; 30-35 apps bought over 5 years
“we paid uh a pretty good price for it, but it was quite under-monetized, um there was room for growth. We knew that there was improvement in like paywalls and in-app subscriptions that we could make”

~250 regular creators, thousands of videos; drove tens of millions of downloads
“we worked with like a lot of agencies over the years, but no then no one could really crack it internally uh for us. So, we just thought, "Why don't we just do it ourselves?"”

Cheaper testing off-peak; breakouts pushed four or five ways
“we would post uh all of the videos organically on our own channels, um and then if they picked up any organic traction, then we would boost them a bit more with our ad spends. And then if they really took off, we would Spark Ad the video to the actual content creators account”

1-2 evergreen videos took 90% of spend; run by one media buyer
“We would have a level one campaign. Basically, every video would go in as like a separate ad set and we would test each video with, you know, $10 to $20”

Sometimes compounded; the top viral video failed to copy across 20-40 creators
“I think if we're able to spend a few hundred dollars a day initially on it with with hitting our metrics, then we think that is a good case to replicate”
