The App Distribution & Monetization Trends in 2026

Solo App Masters livestream Q&A with Steve P. Young. He recommends starting with ASO plus Apple Ads (an app he just acquired makes ~35K MRR mostly from them), says Apple Ads Max Conversions currently beats his custom Basic Plus setup for clients, walks through an old app where an $800 Apple Ads Basic spend returned $3K, explains finding app ideas from demand big advertisers create (Calm's green noise ads) and web search volume (Paraphrase AI), shares his metadata cadence and localization picks, and covers selling small apps on Flippa (one sold for $20K) and deal structures.

An ASO-driven subscription app · B2C · host's acquired app

App makes about $35K a month from mostly store search plus some Apple ads

The recently acquired app gets most of its growth from ASO with some Apple Ads on top; no other channels. Steve recommends early apps pick just one channel stack (ASO + Apple Ads, or Meta, or TikTok) because ASO and Apple Ads only require knowing keywords, while Meta needs creative skills and SDK setup.

App Masters Apple Ads clients spending $60-70K

Beating the agency's own Basic Plus setup on $60-70K client accounts; no numbers

On client accounts spending $60-70K, tested Apple Ads Max Conversions against App Masters' own 'Basic Plus' campaign structure; Max Conversions is currently winning. Setup advice: start with 5-6 keywords you already know convert, set the target cost per install at about half your revenue per install (e.g. $3 CPI for $6 RPI), and on a tight budget start at about $30/day aiming to be profitable right away.

A paid app · B2C · host's own app

Mixed in with Apple ads that ran at a loss; no separate result

After growing organically on ASO, ran an AppAdvice campaign making the app free, while starting Apple Ads at the same time.

A paid app · B2C · host's own app

$800 in ads brought $3,000 in revenue; turning ads off later was a mistake

App earned $1,400 revenue / $1,000 profit a month from organic ASO. First Apple Ads ran at a loss, so he tightened toward a ~$1 cost per install, then used an Apple Search Ads Basic campaign (the forerunner of Max Conversions) told to buy installs only under $1. Spent $800 and made $3,000 that month, with slightly higher profit than organic-only and much higher sales. Later turned ads off because profit was similar without them; he regrets it, because a bigger sales base is harder to lose.

A green noise sound app · B2C · host's own app

Built a green noise app; host calls it the quickest way to revenue (no numbers)

Look at what top advertisers (Calm, Headspace, big health and fitness apps) push in their ads via the Meta Ad Library or an ad intelligence tool. Calm ran many green noise ads, so 'green noise' became an App Store search term. Check the keyword's App Store search score; above ~25 there is a viable business. Then build the app for that keyword (demand first, then build).

Paraphrase AI · B2C · AI paraphrasing app

About $3,000 a month; the app shows up for its 12K-search keyword

Used the Keywords Everywhere Chrome extension (paid credits), Google Keyword Planner and Google Trends to see that 'paraphrase ai' had ~12,000 searches, confirming web demand; built an app named Paraphrase AI and also used the keyword for Apple Ads. Searching 'Paraphrase AI' now returns his app (the web SEO spot is held by paraphraseai.net).

Host says his apps now rank #1 for many keywords he worked on for months

Form a keyword hypothesis: choose 6-10 focus keywords and optimize the title and subtitle for them in both the US English and Spanish (Mexico) localizations. Early after launch, revisit and update metadata almost every two weeks to test the hypothesis. He mentions extra undisclosed 'hacks' reserved for his community.

Beat Vietnamese, Korean and other extra localizations in their tests

Of the extra localizations that the US storefront indexes, only use Spanish (Mexico) for additional US keywords; Arabic, Vietnamese, Korean and others haven't done much better. Brazil (Portuguese) or Vietnamese only if you already have traction there.

An ASO-driven subscription app · B2C · host's acquired app

Ranks really well in the UK; host gives no numbers

Apple treats each storefront independently, so fill in English (UK), English (Australia) and English (Canada) with their own keywords rather than defaulting to the US metadata; search volumes differ by country (Australia is tiny).

A small subscription app · B2C · host's sold app

Sold for $20K about two weeks after agreeing on price

To cut distractions and focus on the apps doing well, listed a small app on Flippa, where a buyer found it. Priced it realistically (expect 2-5x profit; 2-3x is fine) and gave the buyer a decent deal. Both sides were motivated, since time kills deals. Rule of thumb: Flippa for roughly $10-50K apps; for six or seven figures, use a broker (e.g. Evelyn Ferrara, AppBusinessBrokers.com). He also sold another app to ROUNDS.

Host's usual structure from six- and seven-figure deals; no results given

Value on profit (EBITDA, not revenue) at roughly 2-5x. Common structure, illustrated on a $1M deal: $700K (70%) cash at close, $200K earn-out paid if the business keeps growing, and $100K as a seller note (a loan from the seller that the buyer repays with interest).

Target a reporter who just joined the publication (e.g. at TechCrunch). Spend 2-3 minutes on their profile, LinkedIn and X: greet them in their native language via Google Translate, mention a personal detail (e.g. their switch from engineer to reporter), then pitch. Subject line: 'Exclusive to <first name>'. It won't rescue a weak product but gets the email read.
