Navigating App Growth Through Strategic Partnerships and Media Wins — Adam Allore, Wavve Boating

Adam Allore on starting Wavve Boating, a simplified marine navigation app: validating with a fake iPad 'app' at a sub-$1,000 boat show booth, a bare-bones contractor-built MVP, small paid tests where Apple Search Ads won at $0.50-$1 installs, ready-to-publish articles for marine journalists, and how that press led to a Sea-Doo (BRP) integration and a per-activation license deal with Freedom Boat Club. Partnerships now drive ~25% of acquisition; a custom build for a rental company was a distraction.

Under $1,000; visitors asked where to download it, gave emails, and he quit his job

Built a map for himself with free GIS software and sample chart data from the Canadian Hydrographic Service, hosted it on a web page and added it to the home screen of a couple of iPads so it looked like an app. Booked a booth at a local boat show two weeks later, named the company on the spot (Wavve with two Vs because the one-V domain was taken). When visitors searched the App Store and found nothing, said 'we're in beta' and collected their emails.

App was 'very bad' but drew early adopters and proved people would pay

Founder built the maps himself and self-funded a local contractor to build a minimal iOS wrapper to get into the store quickly, to test whether people would pay. Everything besides the map was bare minimum. Also shipped an emergency-response feature he expected to be the hit; users ignored it and said they just wanted the map, so the team focused on the map.

Apple Search Ads won with $0.50-$1 installs

Took an engineering, shotgun approach: tested every paid acquisition channel available with capped budgets of $500-$1,000 each (Facebook ads, Google Search, Apple Search Ads, which was then only a year or two old), self-funded from savings.

Didn't work; too many steps for too little activation

Visited marinas with a drone to take aerial footage, offering a printed poster of their marina that promoted the app if they would put it up.

Got steady coverage and credibility; modest downloads but led to big partnerships

Built a large list of journalists writing in the marine space and sent each a fully written article with images ready to drag and drop, while offering interviews to those who wanted their own piece. Picked a human, less technical angle that stood out from horsepower stories: a Waze-like community where boaters share mooring, beach and fishing spots so 'anyone can boat like a local wherever they go'.

Wavve Boating · B2C · boat navigation app

Became Sea-Doo's navigation app; partner paid integration costs and it enabled the angel round

After BRP's chief engineer found Wavve through a Quebec press hit, BRP asked Wavve to be the navigation app on its own phone-projection display on new Sea-Doo models (driven by a four-way controller, iOS and Android). Adam treated Wavve as a risk the partner had to take and set out to protect the internal champion: extremely responsive, over-delivered, on time, committed only to what he could execute, not greedy. A school friend handled legal review. Structure: riders still subscribe to Wavve; later a discounted offer for Sea-Doo buyers ('$20,000 Sea-Doo, $45 app'); BRP helped pay upfront integration costs.

Raised under $0.5M; enough to hire, build Android and deliver the partner integration

Self-funded (engineering savings) until the iOS app had proven people would pay and the BRP contract was signed, then pitched the local angel network for a modest round.

Landed the deal; club saves vs multi-thousand-dollar chartplotters; no revenue numbers

A Freedom Boat Club staffer at its largest club (Tampa Bay) read about Wavve in a major marine trade magazine and reached out (he later joined Wavve as director of marketing). Adam led with 'how can we help': the club wants members not to run aground and to enjoy time on the water, and boats are its assets. Offered licenses for all members as a cheaper alternative to outfitting boats with chartplotters. Priced per activation for this deal (has also tried flat per-member fees).

Founder says activation, not tech, was the real hurdle; no numbers

For licensed club members, used deep links so they bypass the normal paywall. Deliberately skipped complex anti-abuse authentication, planning to self-police and clean up afterwards, to keep activation as easy as possible. Focused effort on getting members to open the club's email, install and activate, with reminders.

Partner happy, but a distraction from the core consumer app

Riding earlier partnership wins, agreed to build a boat rental company a web-based system to manage its members using the app.

Partners bring ~25% of new users and open doors to other deals

Each signed partnership becomes a new press release that the partner's press team also shares, which drives new press and inbound interest; known partner names (BRP, Freedom Boat Club, boat education and licensing partners) are used as credibility when approaching new partners. Has not yet put partner logos on App Store pages (an acknowledged missed opportunity).

The plant care app Greg partnered with nurseries and plant sellers to include a small QR code in every plant sold, then expanded to bigger and bigger plant sellers.
