Rent a boat show booth and demo a web map on iPads posing as an app
Under $1,000; visitors asked where to download it, gave emails, and he quit his job
Workedvalidationevents
What they did
Built a map for himself with free GIS software and sample chart data from the Canadian Hydrographic Service, hosted it on a web page and added it to the home screen of a couple of iPads so it looked like an app. Booked a booth at a local boat show two weeks later, named the company on the spot (Wavve with two Vs because the one-V domain was taken). When visitors searched the App Store and found nothing, said 'we're in beta' and collected their emails.
What happened
Lots of positive feedback and email signups; people searching the store for the app gave the confidence to quit his engineering job.

“And I was like, "Oh, okay. Give me your emails. We're in beta. Give me your emails, I'll let you know when this thing gets released."”
“Pfft, all-in-all, probably less than $1,000.”
