From $50 In The Bank To Multi-Million-Dollar Exit

Susan Ho (founder of travel-planning startup Journy, acquired by Hopper in 2021; now at Capital One Travel) shares fundraising and founder lessons: 180 investor rejections before finding a growth engine, closing a seed round by stacking nine meetings in two days, underpricing at $6/day, auctioning an acqui-hire offer into a better Hopper deal, testing demand with $19 PDF travel guides ($3,000 in a month), and growing an Instagram founder brand with trial-reel hook tests. Ends with two live app audits.

Too cheap to live on or to trust; 80% of revenue came from boomers

Launched Journy targeting tech-savvy millennials, driven by a mission to democratize luxury travel planning, and charged $6 per trip day for planning. Later pricing was a flat $25 or $50 per day.

180 rejections over about 6 months

Tried to raise money for Journy before she had figured out a growth engine, tracking every pitch in a spreadsheet over about 6 months, sometimes four meetings a day.

Seed round closed in 2 days with three term sheets

Flew to San Francisco and stacked nine investor meetings into 2 days. Every investor knew she was only in town for 2 days to meet investors, so each knew that if they didn't move, someone else would. Her rule: don't start fundraising until you can create competition for the deal and have the meetings back-to-back; investors show growth signal (a lot of growth in a short time), not a magic number, and without a competing offer they keep asking for more data and drag things out.

Nothing worked; couldn't raise more money either

When COVID killed travel, tried pivoting Journy to B2B, from international to domestic travel, and to virtual online experiences, while trying to raise more money from existing and new investors.

Preferred buyer agreed to pay double its first offer

To find jobs for her team, reached out to a bunch of companies; 3 days later Hopper made an acqui-hire offer. Used it to get Expedia to offer to buy the whole company for a lot more, then brought in Lonely Planet, which offered more still. Went back to Hopper: 'we'd rather go with you, we're more excited about your vision, but you're going to have to pay double now.' Existing investors then also offered to recap the company and lead a new round.

A paid travel guides · B2C · guest's new side project

$3,000 in sales in the first month

Named her riskiest assumption: that people will still pay for expert travel advice when they can plan trips with ChatGPT or Claude. Before building an app, put up a landing page selling PDF travel guides at $19 each (about 10x what people expect to pay for a PDF), promoted via a YouTube channel / a friend promoting them. She calls this a 'minimum buyable solution' rather than an MVP: only payment proves value. Now prototyping the app in Claude. She also suggests asking prospects at what price it seems too cheap to be good and at what price it is too expensive.

The Evolved Founder · B2B · coaching for startup founders

20K+ followers from 26 posts; one video drove 500K views, 2,000+ sign-ups

Films herself on her phone and posts Instagram videos on fundraising, travel, building a company and product-market fit, in her spare time alongside a full-time job. Early videos took up to 47 takes. Advice: commit to the first 10 videos before posting any; script and edit all 10 so a weak first video doesn't make you stop, then watch audience patterns. Answers follower questions via DMs and stories.

Winning hook hit ~50K views vs 500; ~3,000 new followers in a day

Posts the same video with different hooks as Instagram Trial Reels, which show only to non-followers. Lets them run a few hours, then promotes the best-performing version to the main feed, and keeps the losing version up in trial reels because it keeps reaching non-followers. Hook drives watch-through. Winning hook opened a question ('Raise VC money. You can make $50 million and still be broke') while the loser answered it ('I teach people how to fundraise, but I wouldn't raise a single dollar today').

Lets her post alongside a full-time job with no editor; no numbers

Built a Claude scriptwriter: she word-vomits an idea to Claude, Claude interviews her to sharpen the script and pull out the salient points, scripts go into Notion, and she films about five videos in one session, then edits them herself with minimal edits (no editor).

A member of the App Founders community A/B tested price points and found 'rounded' prices such as $19.99, $24.99 or $29.99 beat odd ones like $22.99, which feel weird.

Host says weekly tends to win across cleaner apps he's worked with; no numbers

Across several iPhone phone cleaner apps the host has worked with, a weekly plan tends to do better than annual. Recommended setup: default to weekly, put the 3-day trial on the weekly plan, and keep a small 'continue for free' / light-version option below rather than a big bold button.

Host says these icon tricks have worked before; no numbers

On Google Play, where icons matter more than screenshots, cleaner apps that show the current year, a 'New' label and a clean-up callout (brooms/trash imagery are standard) have done well; A/B test the icon against that pattern. Also name the app after the top keyword ('Phone Cleaner') if doing ASO.
