Daniel Heintzma - I speedran a new app from 0 to $2m/year in 6 months (here's how)
Joseph ChoiThis is really helpful to to see the whole onboarding and everything. It It's I can I can see how a lot of this translates to Cal AI too, with like making the the onboarding smooth and making it high converting. Um but then I want to like dig into that story now. Like how did you how did you get into Cal AI? Like how did you meet the team and um and get started working with them?
Daniel HeintzmanWe came across the apps that Blake was working on. And so, and then we had noticed like early on that he was working on this new app, and we had saw that um like I had seen that it was growing quite quickly. And so we reached out. Was talking to Zach initially. And yeah, I ended up joining the team last year. Since then, been working on like a number of different things. When I joined, like the app was actually already already in a pretty good state. Like, I mean, they were already doing like a couple million a month when I by the time I joined. Everything from the onboarding to paywall conversion rate like was quite high. I think it was like above industry standard. And so a lot of my focus like when I joined the team was
Daniel Heintzmanfocusing on features that would improve retention and get people to stay subscribed through the trial period, because they would, you know, there's a three-day trial period, ensuring that people have like enough value that they get throughout that three- three-day period in order to stay subscribed.
Joseph Choi… a ton of value. Overall, it like what is the philosophy for that? Like I imagine if you give too much value, then they just cancel cuz they feel like they got they got everything. But I guess with a app like Cal AI, you're supposed to like the the the real value is um, you know, logging your food every day or, you know, consistently. What What was your like like main, I guess, like North Star goal for what to do with a user in those three days?
Daniel HeintzmanYeah, a lot of it was like classic things that other apps think about when it comes to retention. So, like making the app like less buggy is clearly one of them, but I think improving the core logging experience. Like we did like a redesign of like the core screens in the app when it comes to like logging a meal. We redesigned like the food database, um the camera, the food detail page, things that people experience like all the time. Was also thinking about We had saw that there was a lot of clones of Cal AI. And so,
Daniel HeintzmanI guess the question is, is like how do you like create features that would work on Cal AI that wouldn't work on any other of these clones, as well as like a retention feature? So like one of the ideas that we had had, which we had shipped um like earlier on when I was when I joined Cal AI, was a groups feature, like a community feed where people can join their friends and then like stay accountable together and log foods together. So that was …
