The Secrets to Web2App Growth (And the Risks Nobody Talks About)

Steve P. Young's live stream with Igor Lyubimov (founder/CEO of Web2Wave) on web-to-app compliance risk: Meta's Product Quality ('A') score, App Store reviews and payment-system disputes, and the FTC case against Genesis (hidden renewal terms, one-click upsells). Igor's platform-wide patterns: honest countdown discounts, priced upsells, email/account capture, Stripe renewal emails, simple cancellation, failed-payment emails, chargeback-prevention tools (keep chargebacks under 1.5%) and payment orchestration. Ends with live audits of two viewer apps (suggestions not extracted).

Timers lift conversion 'almost anytime'; honest step-down keeps it compliant

Show a timed offer on the paywall (e.g. '50% off for 5 minutes'). Most apps leave the same timer and discount after it expires. Instead, when the 5 minutes are up, change the offer to 30% or 40% off so you deliver what you promised; Web2Wave and Visa/Mastercard rules point to this fix. Works on web and mobile paywalls.

Required by Visa/Mastercard rules; no conversion numbers

Always state renewal terms (e.g. an intro price like $10 for the first month that renews at $50/month), placed directly next to the payment button and payment form, not several blocks below. Also state refund and cancellation rules: cancel anytime, refund of the last payment, or a pro-rated refund (a yearly buyer asking after a week or a month gets ~90% back). Read the Visa and Mastercard subscription rules for how paywalls must look.

Web2Wave's biggest clients

Lost some conversions; margins could absorb it

After the FTC case against Genesis, Web2Wave's biggest clients rebuilt their paywalls: reviewed all paywall text and added checkboxes on every paywall where the user accepts the terms of use and privacy policy.

Raises LTV; hidden-price versions convert 60-70% but anger users

After the first subscription payment and before sending the user to the app, offer extra products (printable PDF workout plans, extra subscriptions, other apps' subscriptions, physical products). The saved payment token makes it one click, no card re-entry or Apple Pay confirm. Show the price clearly ('This will cost you additional $90') and label the button 'Add to my cart' or 'Purchase', not 'Continue'. Don't hide that the add-on is a subscription.

Genesis · B2C · group of subscription apps

Drew an FTC case; the funnels named were taken down

Alleged in the FTC complaint: '$1 for 1 month' offers with auto-renew terms hidden in small print at the bottom of the paywall, double charges, one-click upsells on unclear paywalls. Some apps' terms only allowed refunds if the user proved 30 days in a row of use with photos.

Lets buyers find charges and cancel; no conversion numbers

Don't sell without an email, even though Stripe allows it. Create the account on the web (ideally with a password), send the user to the app with a deferred deep link so they arrive logged in, and email a link that auto-logs into the app with instructions. Avoids building a login screen in the app that can hurt conversion. Use the email to send a receipt on every charge and give access to a customer portal for managing subscriptions.

Avoids losing people at an email step; email win-back adds 5-10% at most

Asking for email before the paywall loses some people. Instead, many clients ask after payment: offer Apple Pay / Google Pay so one click gives you the email, name and address (address helps renewal rates in Stripe). Then ask for the user's real email, because the Apple Pay email may not be the one they use, so the app link and support reach them. Test before-vs-after for your product.

Guest says it doesn't cut revenue for apps people use; worth testing

Stripe ships with renewal emails disabled; enable them and send a receipt on every charge (Paddle, FastSpring and other merchants of record can also do this). It can lower conversions for apps nobody uses, so measure it.

Complex save flows showed no big revenue or churn change

For web purchases, offer an easy cancel on the web (US click-to-cancel): no phone calls, no required reason. In the customer portal the user clicks the subscription and cancels. Optional, legal win-back offers: pause the subscription, or one year for $10. Keep buttons visible and wording plain (contrast: Amazon's hidden, multi-step cancel). Start simple, then optimize.

A weekly subscription app · B2C · app known to the guest

Healthier than handling their complaints later; no numbers

Measure when a paying user who never uses the app should hear from you. This app sold weekly subscriptions; when users were still paying after 2 months (eight payments) without using the app, it cancelled their subscriptions right away. Lighter version: email users who paid on the web but never downloaded or opened the app ('You're not using the app, please download it' or 'reinstall or cancel').

Keeps chargebacks under the 1.5% danger line; ~$25 per refund

Plug a chargeback-prevention tool in between Visa/Mastercard and the cardholder's bank. When a user tells their bank they didn't authorise a charge, the tool catches the alert and refunds right away, so no dispute is opened. Costs about $25 per refunded transaction (that user becomes negative revenue). Guest calls it mandatory for web payments; keep chargebacks under 1.5% of users or Stripe can freeze the account overnight.

When a renewal charge is declined (insufficient funds or other decline reasons), email the user: 'We couldn't process your renewal payment. Please update your card.' Include a button to cancel the subscription as well.

Web2Wave clients at scale

Raises conversion and keeps selling if one account is blocked; no numbers

Use an orchestration layer that stores the payment token on its side and connects several processors (multiple Stripe accounts, Checkout.com, Adyen...). Set up cascade/failover: try Stripe; if the charge fails, retry on another processor. If one merchant account gets in trouble, keep selling through the others. Web2Wave sees clients at scale use this; smaller players can instead use a merchant of record (Xsolla, Paddle, FastSpring) that handles chargebacks and taxes for a higher fee and a stricter review.

Web2Wave clients selling AI video and kids' story generation

Guest has many clients with successful AI generation funnels; no numbers

For AI generation products (videos, children's stories/books), start generating in the quiz funnel: ask who the child is (boy/girl), their name, upload a photo, what stories they like, then render a preview of the video or story right in the funnel before the paywall, so people see something already made for them.

Sometimes fixes rising CPMs; can't be repeated often

Meta's Product Quality ('A') score comes from post-purchase surveys shown to buyers in their feed (often within a week or two). A low score raises CPMs. Because the score is tied to the Facebook page attached to the ads, switching to another page can reset it; you can't do this often. The lasting fix is happy users: clear terms, no unclear upsells, easy cancel, refunds on request.
