What they did

With no consumer app experience, downloaded all dating apps he knew or found (Hinge, Bumble, Feeld and niche ones), studied every part of the app (onboarding length, hard vs freemium paywall at end of onboarding) and copied what they liked while adding a sporty brand.

In their words

$140K MRR Niche Dating App in Just 6 Months

… this, but we knew that online dating was like a $10 billion market. And there wasn't any product that was like answering the need for active singles to actually meet each other. There was, you know, these big trends of like Strava being the new dating app, RunClubs being the new dating app, but they were not dating apps per se. So I was like, let's do it. Let's do it. And yeah, as I said, there was one app that was making like 50K MRR in France

10:33

and the product was really shitty. Sorry for saying this. So I was like, why not make a better product myself? That was our play. Okay. I can't wait to hear about the co-founder side because I do want to talk to you about that, but we'll let you kind of go through all this. Our philosophy about the app, because as I was saying, I didn't know anything about consumer apps maybe eight or nine months ago. And I was like, we are not experts. So I just downloaded all of the dating apps I knew

11:03

and that I found. On the left, you can see my iPhone that my girlfriend doesn't really like because it's just like full of dating apps. But yeah, I just looked at everyone. We inspired ourselves from what we liked, what we saw. And we had also to create this sort of specific branding and to give a sports mood to the app, that was something quite hard. And it's still hard to do, like being able to give the singles

11:35

a sporty mood on the app. But yeah, this was our philosophy. So we were like, all right, let's see what the others do and let's try to do something as good as them. And for a bit of a timeline on the app itself, so it was live on the 26th of December, we rolled out monetization on 23rd. I will remember the first weekend my whole life, I think. So the monetization was rolled out on a Friday. On a Monday, we had already made 1K in MRR. And 30 days …

… key learnings or was it just understanding the onboarding the product it was more about understanding every aspect of the app because as i said again we didn't know anything about consumer apps especially not dating apps and building a social product we we knew it was going to be tough so we just wanted to understand it the best way of course we we unlocked uh very specific insights in the dating industry but um um maybe there's a few insights

13:47

that I can generalize to consumer apps in general, like having either a short onboarding or a long onboarding in different categories, or having a hard paywall or a free paywall, a freemium paywall at the end of the onboarding. So there are a few things we, of course, learned, but it was mainly to understand each piece of the app and being able to make our own out of it. I know we're going to get into this, but I do. The app is not available in every country. It is only in France right now. Yeah, yeah, definitely. so as we speak we are rolling out belgium today but uh apart from that yeah for the first six or

14:21

seven months it's only available in france i love it and i think a lot of people like seem to target the us like steve let me help me with that i'm like where are you from and they'll be like oh i'm from germany i'm like bro have you done enough in germany too because you understand that market a little bit better and i've seen a lot of apps do well in germany just in germany so i was like yeah like have you done everything you've done you could …
