Build a small app around one side feature of a big app, like green noise
Host says his portfolio since ~2020 was built this way; only 10-20% of apps hit

What they did
1) Pick a category with high revenue per install from the RevenueCat State of Subscription Apps report (Health & Fitness, Education, Business). 2) Find a big app that expanded from one core offer into many 'tentacles' (Calm: meditation -> sleep stories, soundscapes, focus, music, green noise). 3) The big app can only rank for its brand and core keyword, so pick one tentacle keyword with search volume (App Masters used green noise) and build a whole product around it. 4) Publish many apps: only about 10-20% will hit, a few become big and the rest stay small.
What happened
App Masters says its app portfolio since about 2020 was generated this way; an unnamed portfolio company using it has a couple of big apps and many small ones.
- Stage
- Pre-launch (idea selection / portfolio)
“our app portfolio since pretty much I think 2020, I want to say, has been generated using this exact strategy”
“So what you do as an indie, is you take a popular tentacle that has search volume, and then you build your entire product off of one tentacle”
“But you can focus on green noise, like we have, as well.”
